In close collaboration with industrial partners, ECN Fuel Cell Technology develops materials, components, stacks and system components for stationary and automotive applications of fuel cells. Research areas are:

SOFC - our research covers the main SOFC components: the electrolyte, the electrodes and the flow plates. High power outputs at reduced operating temperatures are achieved by using thinner electrolyte layers on basis of yttria doped zirconia. More robust and efficient layers are being developed to have it withstand a variety of fuels with all of its contaminants, fuel interrupts and thermal cycles.

PEMFC - we want to improve the performance of PEMFC to make them suited for a wider range of applications and operating conditions. At the same time we help develop early markets by making available the state-of-the-art PEMFC technology to third parties for training and product development.

FC systems - we are dedicated to the development and demonstration of fuel cell systems on a pilot or demonstration scale - covering the complete power system from fuel to electricity

Fuel processing - the group's aim is to develop efficient, reliable, compact and cost-effective technologies for producing hydrogen from natural gas and other commonly available fuels. Our specialty is the development and evaluation of fuel processing catalysts and reactors for both mobile and stationary applications.
