Key feature: Fuel cell electric vehicles powered by hydrogen are part of the electric transport family

Fuel Cell & Hydrogen stakeholders have joined forces early February  to explain the role of hydrogen and fuel cell vehicles in electric transport, in light of the European Union current debate for the market development of electric vehicles.

Spain, which currently holds the EU's rotating Presidency is strongly  pushing for the development of a European strategy for electric vehicles, with the aim of tabling a common EU action plan for adoption in May to give Europe's car-manufacturing industry a competitive edge in the race against the US, China and Japan.

In a joint statement, FuelCellEurope with  the European Hydrogen Association (EHA), the European Regions and Municipalities Partnership for Hydrogen (HYRAMP) as well as the European Industry Grouping for a Fuel Cell & Hydrogen Joint Technology Initiative (NEW IG) have welcomed the plan to push electric vehicles and have called upon the Competitiveness Council to acknowledge the need for increased and coordinated EU financial support to commercialize electrical mobility in the EU, including battery and fuel cell electric vehicles.

News from FuelCellEurope: Bridging the knowledge gap with Policy Makers in Europe on fuel cells and hydrogen potential

On 26 January, FuelCellEurope held a successful Dinner Debate in the European Parliament, raising  awareness among Members of the European Parliament (MEP)  about fuel cell and hydrogen technologies. Only one week afterwards was held a  second debate on the future of Hydrogen, in Edinburgh for Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSP).

Building on the success of these two debates in the European Parliament and in  the Scottish Parliament, FuelCellEurope together with supporting organisations, in particular CIFAL Findhorn, United Nations Institute of Training and Research(UNITAR) Associated center, plan to organise similar debate and training initiatives in Parliaments across Europe.

FuelCellEurope reports in this E-Zine on the two first debates held in Brussels and in Edinburgh.

View from Brussels: Financing fuel cell technologies now is key for Europe's sustainable energy future beyond Copenhagen

The way to a cleaner energy future that includes zero emission fuel cells and hydrogen technologies exists but it has to be paved by public funding, to allow the initially required economies of scale in the production of fuel cells and therewith bring about the market demand for green hydrogen.

In this regard, FuelCellEurope recently published a series of communications and position papers, calling public and also private stakeholders to foresee increased project funding as well as demand-pull instruments such as feed-in tariffs, tax incentives schemes and public procurement policies for fuel cell and hydrogen technologies.

Read more about FuelCellEurope positions regarding the current debate on financing low-carbon technologies and the future European Union Strategy for 2020.

Zoom: "Fuel cell technology: Demystifying the future of combined heat and power (CHP) for green cities - onsite production of heat and electricity."

An exclusive roundtable on fuel cell technologies will take place during the 2010 European Sustainable Energy Week in Brussels.(EUSEW 2010)

Focus:

The Roundtable will focus on fuel cell combined heat and power demonstration projects and applications in industrial or public buildings and households to bring intelligent energy in the cities.

Objectives:

  • To showcase concrete projects in Europe and share best practices and experiences among the multiple parties.
  • To bridge the gap between potential end users and fuel cell stakeholders and demystify fuel cell applications for Combined Heat and Power systems for green cities.
  • To raise awareness and potentially create synergies between end users (private, business and public sector) and fuel cell stakeholders.

Details:

25 March 2010, at 14h30, European Commission (Borschette Center), Brussels, Belgium.

About fuel cells

Fuel cells are electrochemical device that combine fuel and oxygen from air to produce electricity.
The conversion of the fuel to energy takes place without combustion, allowing for a highly efficient, quiet and clean process.

When combined with hydrogen, fuel Cell offer a unique combination of advantages that address the European challenges in Energy, Transport, Environment and Competitiveness.
