The fuel cell market has three commonly defined segments: Portable, Stationary and Transportation.
Each segment has its own characteristic requirements, including user profile and power level, cost, reliability and size.
Many consider the Micro sector to be a separate segment in addition to the three mentioned above. This sub-sector has a large market potential that stems from the sheer volume of devices to which micro-fuel cells could be applied: mobile phones, lap-top computers and PDAs, etc.
Early market applications cross the over the commonly defined segments, as niche markets are appearing in portable, stationary & transportation applications. Currently early fuel cell markets are focused primarily on fuel cells applications for material handling, (like forklift) backup power or prime-power applications.
With the cost of producing fuel cells reducing and with the amount of demonstration projects and prototypes rising, fuel cells technologies are getting closer to the market. With the market uptake of fuel cells technologies, applications will move into a wider array of consumer products.
